The Trip to the Interior of Guyana

This Blog is to show others, if you're interested, and ourselves for future viewing.
We made an 8 day trip into the Hinterland of Guyana to Visit 9 villages of indigenous people ( Amerindians) who live here and have done so for many many years. They are such great people and we took a big truck load of goods, tools, bicycles, and sewing machines. We only wish it were possible to have taken much much more to them and to the many other villages.
We left Georgetown in a Toyota Bus/van and traveled 350 miles ( on a dirt road ) leaving at 9:00 pm and arriving in Lethem at 10:30 the next morning. After arriving in Lethem, we had a large truck loaded with the goods and items, and we followed in an old Toyota Forerunner.
We traveled with two other persons from here, that we knew and had planned this trip with.
They both are natives of Guyana and are into the helping and humanitarian work for their countrymen.. Great people. We then left the town of Lethem which is on the Brazil border and then traveled many miles to each village with our big truck and the Toyota we were in. The following pictures will show, hopefully, the neat people and how they live and the country they live in.. The Savanna where they live is much different than here in Georgetown, as the pictures will show. We learned more about Anthropology, Geology, Nature in general, and Culture, than we thought possible. We saw great results from the visits and learned compassion for a great race of people. They live in very meager circumstances, and have such a humble attitude, that we can all learn from them. This blog is a bit long, but tells a good story, and it is for our memories,,, so we don't forget these experiences that have changed our lives. Hope whoever chooses to read this blog, will have compassion for others who are less fortunate....

Came to a river and I could'nt get across!!

Pix # 1 Our Truck made it across the river and sent the unloading guys back over with a strap to help us with the 55 gallon drum barge, for our Forerunner. Before it rained we came across just fine the other direction.

We just finished three projects in St. Lucia, and we feel so happy that the Church is becoming more acknowledged and appreciated there. The Ministry of Human Services was needing help. They were having a hard time getting a home functioning properly for the abused and abandoned children. They needed appliances, clothing and etc. so we went there to see if we could help. We shopped with them and were able to help them purchase many items. It was so enjoyable for us and they were very appreciative! None of them seemed to be able to say the name of our Church correctly so everytime they would say it, we would very politely, say it the right way. We built a very good relationship with them and were able to be a part of a Container of 250 wheelchairs that came in this past summer. Everyone was elated with the many wheelchairs for all ages of people. Then we ordered a container of goods for them. The volume of goods in a 40 foot container overwhelmed them. They just couldn't believe a Church would do something like this for people they didn't even know and especially because they weren't even members of our Church! The excitement was high and they didn't want to have a Handing Over Ceremony until all the Government and Ministry people could be in attendance. They e-mailed us several times expressing their gratitude and appreciation!!

We noticed while we were there for this ceremony that not one person said the name of our Church incorrectly and that made us smile and feel so good!
Clementia Eugene, Director of Human Services whom we worked with closely on all three projects, while speaking to everyone at the ceremony, said she was "inspired" the night before to write a poem about her feelings. She said she has never written a poem before but felt strongly to write this one. As she read it, the cameramen recorded it and it was shown on 2 different T.V. channels for several days.

This poem was given to us in a very nice frame at the ceremony. A very nice plaque was given to the Branch President, President DeBeauville and his wife.
The spelling and language in this poem is exactly how Clementia wrote it. That's why we especially love it!! Hope you enjoy it also!!!

School Uniform Vouchers

As one can see, and with this time of year, we have spent a considerable amount of time helping with schools, and the children being able to go to school..Here in Guyana the children need to have a uniform and shoes or they cannot attend school. They do not get any lunch or snacks provided either. They are not charged for any tuition, but must provide their own supplies ( books, pencils, paper etc.) Many children cannot go to school because of poverty and no funds for school. Many of the children have to ride the bus ( a fare is charged ) which also limits many children from attending . Opportunity is the way out of poverty and we feel education will provide opportunity for these young children. Hence, we have put in much time and much Humanitarian effort to aid as many children as we can....which is a very few compared to the many needs!!!

Pix 1. This is our champion-friend who is a member of Parliment, and a great advocate of children.. who we have worked with many times and partnered with. This project is for school vouchers to be used for uniforms for needy children. This lady is being interviewed for TV about our Voucher Program. The Humanitarian project has provided 1200 vouchers.

Outreach Program/Poor Neighborhood School Children

Spent the day handing out school shoes and back packs for very needy children in a very poor area. We spent hours filling back packs with school supplies and helping them try on shoes, as our project was to purchase cases of shoes and some backpacks and school supplies. ( notice I picked out the NBA backpacks) and the kids loved them.

These Pictures show some of the visits to 7 villages of the Amerindians.
These people remind us so much of the natives back home. They are Lamanites for sure!!!
We were able to deliver some farm equipment to them by plane, as this is the only way to get this equipment to them. Farming is their livelihood, so this was a great thing for them. They live very close to Brazil, in fact they can walk 6 hours and be in Brazil and they do it to have babies and to get some supplies. After we delivered the equipment the last village had a small store, and there were about 130 kids watching for the plane to land, we decided to buy the kids a treat from the store... We bought it out!!! we gave the kids a drink and a snack, which we learned later, they had not had a treat like this since last Christmas. We met some nice people there, they are very polite, and small, kind of bashful and smart.. We talked to many of them and one was a Village Captain ( Chief) that we made friends with. We hope we can return.. it was an amazing day for us.

These Pictures show part of the 370 Parents waiting in line for hours to receive a $10.00 voucher for their children, that is part of a 2000 Voucher Project that we are working on in different villages/ towns. We are so hopeful that more children can go to school this year, as they have to have a uniform or they cannot attend..and the cost of living here is about out of reach for most residents. They had to come register to collect their voucher.

These Pictures show a school we were involved with. It shows the school. which is a comprehensive school, hence many ages.
3 Teachers at the school (Excellent Teachers) all under 19 years of age.
Man with the tie is a Branch President Pres. Bharrat-- Other man is Reverend Kuseial, the headmaster of the school and he has a PHD from England.

As we were leaving they had a short program for us and these students sang to us, "I Am a Child of God"!!! Christian, Hindu, and Muslim students all participated. This school teaches great religious principles, and they learned this song for this program, the whole student body knew the song.

"Son, said the father, "you don't know what you're asking, someone with such a disability would be a terrible burden on us. Can't let someone like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way on his own."

At that point the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief stricken parents flew to San Francisco and was taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They rcognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and a leg.

The parents in this story are like many people. They find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but they don't like people who inconvenience them or make them feel uncomfortable. There are many who would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as they are.

We hope that everyone can learn to accept and love people as they are... There are so many people in this world that need unconditional love!!

Travis and Isaac visit to Barbados/Guyana

Travis and Isaac had planned to come visit us here in Georgetown, Guyana and bring Church books and materials for kids here in Primary, they were donated by members of Isaac's primary and Ward members. Isaac also had his 3rd grade class donate school books for kids here in a 3rd grade class.
We met them in Barbados and spent a few days there,, Note the beautiful clear colorful water in the Carib. Ocean.. Then notice with Isaac standing on the Sea Wall in Guyana, the color of the North Atlantic, very very brown, Three very large rivers flow from the interior of a tropical rain forest into the Atlantic, so that is why it is so brown..
They brought and delivered the Books and materials to the 3rd grade class, and to the Primaries here.

Three: Travis found some old ( many) Land Rovers... there are alot here, as this was English Country, and old English trucks, and Rovers, are still used here... But Toyota has taken totally over with vehicles.

Five: Travis and Isaac on a beach where we had lunch.
Six: Bridgtown shot of the Carib. and the kids. The capital of Barbados.
Seven: Tavis and Isaac and the boat and boatsman we had been on all morning..
Eight: Isaac on the Sea Wall in Georgetown Guyana.. Th ocean is brown here and not inviting, in fact no one swims here. The sea wall was built by the Dutch years ago, to keep the ocean out. Georgetown is about 3 ft. below sea level. and the wall is about 250 miles long... Next blogg, we hope to have some experiences to share after we do a planned visit into the interior for a project with the Amerindian Villages. Lamanites to you who understand..

Travis/Isaac Visit to Guyana

These pictures are when Travis and Isaac visited us for a week, we will display a few pictures,, we took a ton of them..
First: is the saddest,,, They are leaving the Guyana Airport, after a Great Visit to Barbados, and Guyana.
Second: Travis and Isaac and our Branch President and a couple of the kids in our Branch, Isaac brought some church books, donated by his Ward Primary Kids, and the folders were well received as they contained FHE. materials for the Branch President to distribute to the members.
Third: We visited a zoo, and Isaac made friends with the guys who feed the tigers, jaguars, and other meat eaters,, the meat in the wheelbarrow is Horse Meat.

It is a hoot, it is a fund raiser for the youth for a summer camp ( in the Jungle no less) all of the people are dancing,, and the music is loud and and Carib. music,, I wish I knew how to blogg it so you could watch and view the action.
The third: is an oil paintng on the wall of the Organization of Disabled Persons in St. Lucia.
The fourth: is some of the Wheelchairs donated to this organization by Humanitarian, we had at the Handing Over Ceremony.

These four pictures show a little about what has happened recently.
The Senior Couples we work with sometimes, at a FHE.
We helped some Nursery, Primary ( Elementary) and Secondary schools with aid.. and now they all had their graduations.. and guess who was invited to all of them, and guess who had to be the guest speakers? The graduations here are BIG DEALS. In fact it is the only deal in town ( except the Church, and Rum Shops) J/K.

This is a brand new chapel ( one of three in Guyana) the rest are rented homes or buildings.
It was just dedicated last week,, Georgetown is trying very hard to become a Stake.

This is a pix of a lady that has no legs, that the Elders met and taught. We were able to get her a wheelchair last week , and she was baptized t0night. A Great Experience!!!!

Farmers Project back in the interior

We have had a project to help a farmers organization to improve their farms which in turn will help them to become self reliant by earning a better income.
The following pictures are:
We got in a speed boat to go upriver to a farm and his house and family.

Handing over ceremony to the farmers association. we donated brush cutters, chain saws, shredder and tillers so they can clear the jungle growth to cultivate the land. They charge each one who uses the equipment a small fee to help maintain the equipment. This reminded me of FFA days.
